 Dear Friends and Supporters,
In the last year or so, there has been uncertainty about the future of the JCO. In what form should it carry on etc.
The JCO committee and trustees have decided that the orchestra will give its final concert on May 6th 2012.
We’ve have contributed to the musical life in our community for over 25 years, staging 3 concerts a year, bringing together high caliber soloists, local musicians and promoting young talent.
At the start, we were a young group of musical parents with children at Michael Hall School who wanted to bring quality ‘live’ music experiences to the doorsteps of the local families at affordable prices.
We think that if there is energy, vision and commitment around in the younger generation of parents and supporters for such an initiative, it would inevitably be different from before and therefore, we feel, it is better for it to happen fresh and new.
Our final concert on the 6th of May will be the culmination of all that we have aspired to.
This concert will feature 3 pieces by British composers, in the year of the Diamond Jubilee.
We welcome again Trish Calnan’s group of young string players joining us in ‘The Sea and the Sky”, a piece by Jeff Moore (originally commissioned by the LSO).
This will be followed by the popular ‘Serenade’ by Edward Elgar.
The crowning of the concert will be the Walton Cello Concerto performed by the very promising young cellist from Forest Row Laura Van der Heijden, whose talent we have nurtured and enjoyed in past concerts. Now at the age of 14, she is the youngest finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2012.
She will perform with the largest JCO ever (56 players), the same work that she will be performing for the BBC finals on 13 May (watch BBC2 6pm). We are very privileged.
Although JCO will not be putting on, or organizing concerts any more, we will carry on supporting high quality music in the community by way of making modest grants of sponsorship to individuals or groups who wish to put on concerts locally at affordable prices. The present committee of the JCO will meet 4 times per year to assess the applications and make appropriate awards.
Our first sponsorship in this new phase of the Jupiter will be the Ashdown Music Festival in November.
We hope our new and existing friends will continue to support us in this very exciting new phase in the life of the JCO.
The JCO is a registered Charity and would benefit hugely from legacies foundation grants and, if you are a tax payer we can recoup tax from HMRC.
